First off, I'm going to say hi to the latest group of people I've picked up in a friending meme. Welcome, and I hope I don't disappoint you too badly as a friend.

Next, Anyone have any good recommendations for podcasts? I prefer listening to the spoken word rather than to music at work (I have a tendency to have to sing along dramatically to any music that plays, so I get a lot of people laughing at me singing silently with exaggerated facial expressions if I listen to music at work.) Right now I'm really loving Popstuff from HowStuffWorks since it hits my love of anthropological studies of western subcultures (though not so in depth as I would usually like). I'm also a huge fan of The Savage Lovecast (and quote it all the time, which may be weird) and Stuff You Missed in History Class, also from HowStuffWorks, if that helps narrow down the kind of thing I like. I am particularly looking for something to take the place of The Broadway Bullet which I loved but died after the show runner moved back to Montana (where it is slightly more difficult to report on the happenings of New York theater.

Finally, I am going to do the book!meme from [livejournal.com profile] bookishgeek but as a thirty(one)-day meme instead of a oneshot deal -- because I like books and I feel like it.

So.....
A book you are reading right now
There are 5-ish )

Now that we are working on phase III's I get to listen to my iPod all day at work.  I could do so on phase I's, but I find it rather important that I be able to hear my crew, and from the number of times they've been un-able to hear me because of their music, I think it's a rather bad idea.  Anyway, I really like listening to the spoken word while I work, but I find myself rapidly going through the back-log of podcasts and audiobooks that I have.  So, give me your recs.  Anybody have a favorite podcast?  A great audiobook?  An audio drama they think everyone should listen to?  I'd be willing to give them a try.

Right now I'm listening to Alice I Have Been and greatly enjoying it.  It's historical fiction based on the life of Alice Liddell  the "real" Alice in Wonderland.  It's moody and dark and there are Victorians.  I love me some Victorians.  I've always felt a certain kinship with the Alice stories, possibly because I've had the following conversation many times in my life.

Me: Hi, I'm Allison
Then: Like like the book? Allison Wonderland.
Me: No. That's Alice in Wonderland.  A girl called Alice in a place called Wonderland not a girl who's first name is Alice and last name is Wonderland.
Them: Oh
Me: But I was named for someone called Alice.

Or, you know, I may have just liked the headband.  Also the pinafore (see above re: Victorians).

As I said in This entry I came late to watching House because of a wonderful show, which like many other wonderful shows was critically acclaimed but with little audience, called Veronica Mars. One of my favorite parts of the VM fandom was the podcast Neptune Pirate Radio. It obviously met its demise with the end of the show it sprang from, but has recently returned as the reinvented My Show is Dead. If you are at all interested in the relationship between fandom and the source it springs from (in this case television) I would suggest checking it out. For instance, in the last episode (the only one available so far) they discussed casting additions to established shows and the hubub this creates among fans. The next one is supposed to be about the "sophomore slump" syndrome. Truely, this is the best put together fan-based podcast I've heard both in terms of content and technical aspects. So, once again check it out if you're interested.
