  1. Pokemon Go with Beth

  2. I found out a while ago that my soprano section leader is also a bit of a Pokemon Go fan. As some of the special events happen right after church, we have on occasion played together. Today we had an appointment to pop eggs and become 'Best Friends,' which ended up being quite the good time. I'm often terrible with relating to people from one context in another context, so I always enjoy when it happens organically. Do other people have that problem?

  3. Singing Into the Deep

  4. I love this movement from Rutter's Requiem. It is such a great Alto song! I've been assigned to first soprano for nearly a year now, but I still spent 15 years singing low alto, so I always get a little thrill when a great alto song come up.

Also, just listen to that Cello!

  5. I can breath through my nose again

  6. My cold is on the way out, what more could I want?

  7. Scheduling

  8. This is the one part of my weekend plan that I did really well on. I got through all my backed up mail, made it to inbox zero (well, more or less) and reconciled my analog and digital calendars. Go me!

  9. Cooking for the week

  10. I am not the biggest fan of cooking, but I do recognize it as a necessary part of my life. Last week, with having been away all weekend, I did pretty terribly on the cooking front -- like I did it not at all. This week I really needed to do better. So right now, in my refrigerator, I have portioned off lunches for the whole week (butter beans in bbq sauce, potato salad, and a mixture of roasted tomatoes, garlic, and edamame) as well as some homemade sun dried tomato hummus to put on pasta for a couple of dinners. The best part of all? Everything was made from things I already had on hand!

I was out of town last weekend and sick for most of this week, so I am feeling pretty behind. The productivity experts tell me not to concentrate on more than three things at a time, so I give you my plans in lists of threes.

- Only 28 rows and a bind off to go

Ottoman Slip Cover

- Next step pipping!

- Then I can attach the skirt to the upper portion and be done

Three Chores to Do

Change out Litter Boxes

- So overdue

Well, I can’t stop at the Framingham services on the Massachusetts Turnpike any more.

The last time I stopped for my snack the cashier said he loved me. The time before that he made kissing noises at me. The time (or maybe two times) before that was the first time I’d ever seen this particular cashier. Now I’m just creeped out.

New co-worker is currently annoying the crap out of me. They are definitely a questioner in the Four Tendencies framework, and in a lot of ways that is definitely good. One of our expressed goals this year is to rework all the reports to be more automatic and streamlined. I am glad that they are thinking about ways to accomplish that.

However, you may have noticed that the streamlining is our stated goal for this YEAR. Not this month, this week, and especially not today. At least not on a whole scale level. Today, our goal was to add approximately 15 columns to three of our reports (really the same report, but each of the three months we are currently looking at are in separate documents) so that they would be present for the big run tomorrow. Our supervisor had worked out all the formulas and what he wanted in each of the columns, so it was really just a copy and paste into the new documents, plus adding three sheets for background calculations. Everything else was already present.

New co-worker was give this task since they do not currently have access to the sql database needed to run (the majority) of the other 17 tasks that represent a Wednesday in report-land. Co-worker started their task at approximately 8:30 after we had a conversation about where each of the pieces of data that they needed lived. When I left at 3:00 there was still not one additional column in any of the reports! They had spent all of that time coming up with a whole new way to download the data. And it definitely wasn’t just that they were confused. I made that mistake a couple of time through the day and tried to reiterate where each of the pieces of data could be found. Each time they brushed me off with an “Oh I know, I just want to really understand where all of this is coming from.” Anytime I mentioned the time constraint they assured me that everything would be there.

The fact of the matter is that the data probably will be there tomorrow, but I am not sure how much of this cutting close to the deadline stress I am going to be able to deal with.

You are home alone. It is evening but not terribly late; somewhere in the 7:00 - 8:30 range. There is a knock on the door. You are not expecting anyone. Do you answer it?

I met my new 'across-the-hall' neighbor last night, so obviously I did answer the door. But as I was walking to it, I was thinking of how general wisdom seems to be not to open the door. I really don't want to live with that sort of fear, but at the same time, the fear has already permeated my consciousness. IDK.

Anyway, my neighbor just wanted to know if I had a printer because he needed to print something as part of his job search. I invited him in -- he even removed his shoes without being asked! -- and printed the forms that he emailed to me. Really, that is the kind of community I want, so I am glad that I ignored the general wisdom.

The no-spend challenge was a big-old fail this evening. I didn't get home from work until 7:15, which is a good 2 hours after the time I was expecting to return -- so anything that took a lot of cooking was off the table.

My first idea for a quick dinner was little pita pizzas. I opened the pita package to find a big spot of mold between the two pitas that remained. So that was out.

Then I was just going bake a sweet potato in the microwave. Stabbing in my vent holes, I found that the half the sweet potato was black and kind of weepy. Gross.

At that point I gave up and ordered something.

  • Rent
Pretty self explanatory and it has already been taken out of my checking account.
  • Utilities
    Same as above
  • Groceries
Groceries will consist of multi-use items that I can buy at a grocery store. Personal toiletries and household cleaning products would count. A quick bottle of soda and a candy bar or the lunch buffet would not.
  • Gas
I still need to attend work it is, unfortunately, far enough away that I will have to drive.
  • Compost Bin Materials
Ideally I would have pre-bought these materials, but I didn’t. Since they relate to another one of my monthly goals I will let them slide.
  • Cat Food and Litter
I should have enough, but if I don’t, there is no reason that Charlie should have to suffer.
  • Medication
I know I have to pick up my medication this month and there is no need to bring back depression or go through withdrawal because of being stubborn.
  • One Work Lunch a Week
This is our main way of work group bonding. I would like to cut down, but I do not want to cut all ties.
  • Work Coffee if invited
Same as above, except I’ve only actually been invited three times in the last six months; however, each of those times was with the only other woman on our team and I would like to encourage that friendship.
  • Deposits for Non-January Events
I am specifically thinking of our choir trip to Germany in June and a hotel for the Doctor Who convention in February.
  • Emergencies
If Charlie gets sick, I get sick, my car dies, etc. I will, of course, do what is necessary to take care of the problem.

Tomorrow is officially the start of my 19 for 2019 goal list, so I figure it is time to layout my ideas for the first month. First off, we have the four things that will need to be on each month’s list:

    1. Send one piece of snail mail
    2. Meditate at least 3x a week
    3. Practice Music 3x a week
    4. Share one positive thing each day on instagram

The snail mail shouldn’t prove to be too difficult. I have at least on thank you note from Christmas that I need to send — my brother’s MIL was very sweet and sent me a goal-based planner to keep track of this challenge after reading about it on my facebook — and one Christmas card from an old pen friend that I should respond too.

Both the meditating and the music (Voice in case you were wondering) practice I really need to set up a schedule for. I think, to start with, I will schedule both for Tuesday, Thursdays, and Saturdays. Those tend to be my most open days, but I do have two worries with that schedule. First, I often end up working late on Thursday evenings, which then has a tendency to throw my whole evening off and I have found creating any kind of schedule on Saturday to be sort of difficult. I always have the best of intentions and then I get caught up in my latest book or agree to help with a Pokemon raid and then suddenly half the day is gone. However, I am hoping that the 3x a week nature of the goal will give me plenty of opportunities to catch up if I miss a scheduled day here and there.

As for the instagram pictures, my biggest is worry is remember to actually take the pictures. I may kick myself in the future for committing to everyday, but I also think that the consistent practice of appreciation is an important part of the exercise. It just wouldn’t have the same impact as an X-times-per-week goal.

Which brings us to the four goal concentrations I have chosen for this month.

    1. Monthly Sustainability Focus: Composting
    2. No-Spend Challenge
    3. Running a 5K

I already have a small vermi-composting bin set up for my food scraps and paper trash, but I would like to get better at using it and expand the operation a bit. I’d like to take some time this month to build a larger bin and find out exactly how to keep my worms happy.

I will undertake the no-spend challenge this month because one of the podcasts I listen to, Mama Minimalist , is hosting one. Difficult things are always easier with company…right? Anyway, I am currently working on my buy/no-buy list and hope to share more about that tomorrow.

I’ve already signed up for a 5K on April 27, so I figure that I need to start training right away. I have gone through the whole C25K program before, but fell off the wagon after a task/hour shift at work. That was 5? years ago. This time I want a goal in my sights and I want to take things nice and gentle. I plan to work on weeks 1-3 of the program in January, repeating at least one of those weeks before I move on. I may try to do the repeat week outside since the race will be outside, but I plan to do most of running on the treadmills in the apartment complex fitness room.

Anything I missed? Any plans of your own? Any words of wisdom? Let me know!

    19 in 2019

Does anyone else listen to the podcast Happier with Gretchen Rubin? Last year the hosts, following a listener suggestion, advocating making a list of 18 things to do in 2018. I didn’t do it. Because I like to come to everything late, I decided that this year would be my year; I would do 19 in 2019. So I made my list of 19 tasks and goals to work on during the year.

I know that I need some accountability, and I also know that I don’t want to join the Happier facebook group to talk about this, so I though I would try posting here again. It has been a while, and I have said that before, so here’s to maybe another chance.

This month's theme over at [livejournal.com profile] allmovies20in20 was musicals. Since The Sound of Music has been one of my favorite movies since I was about three it seemed like the obvious choice. For those who would like to know, I used "Confidence" (which incidentally was written for the movie so I feel like it is an extra appropriate choice) for the favorite song. For "random word" the generator gave me detoxification, weekly, and proposal -- I chose proposal.

I really wish that Entergy would send notice before they turn off the gas to make upgrades. It is a little inconvenient to come home only to find the gas turned off :-(. At least this time it was totally turned off and not back on with the pilot lights out so that gas was just streaming into my apartment.

Feel free to choose the one you like best to be your own personal valentine amongst the group. Also, why does the red sqiggly line think that amongst is not a word? /important valentines questions.

Standard Meme, pick a character I know and I will attempt to tell you the following (by which I mean I don't really have nicknames for anyone):

    Why I like them
    Why I don’t
Favorite episode (scene if movie, book, manga, etc)
    Favorite season/movie/book/volume
    Favorite line
    OTP
    Brotp
    Head Canon
    Unpopular opinion
    A wish
    An oh-god-please-don't-ever-happen
5 words to best describe them
    My nickname for them

A non-exhaustive list of fandoms: Doctor Who (classic and new, as well as associated media and series), Harry Potter, The X-Files, The West Wing, X-Men (movie verse, not really First Class), Glee, Robin Hood BBC, Pride and Prejudice (2005), Christy -- If you know I know something else it is fair game. Meh, adding Game of Thrones 'cause I forgot but I have feels.

I just got back from Christmas Eve services (where, as is tradition I managed to drip hot wax all over my fingers). I'm going to take this opportunity to say Merry Christmas to everyone as I will be traveling most of my tomorrow. Louisiana to Pennsylvania to New Jersey, here I come!
