Dammit Steven Moffat.  You said you were going to make me love Matt Smith's doctor -- Did you have to accomplish it so soon.  Really, I wanted just a little bit more time to wallow.

I still think the new costume makes the Doctor look like Prof. Harold Hill from the Music Man...Which kind of makes me love him all the more.

I'm currently watching the first part of the Key to Time trilogy(?)  Everything else seems to come in trilogies so I'll stick with that for now, but I seem to think that this saga is actually longer.  Is that right?  Anyway, I was wondering if anyone could explain to me why the White Guardian looks like Colonel Sanders?

So what Old School Who pairings do people read?  'Cause, uh, I could use some recs.

In may be possible that I have only watched up through half (or so) of Tom Baker.  It may also be possible that that in no way precludes me from reading later based fics.

Well it took me awhile -- doesn't everything -- but here is the second half of my Gallifrey One round up.

Saturday and Sunday )So I think that is it.  And it only took me a little over a week to get this all posted.  Now I can't wait for next year.  I may even get to be official con-ops for that convention, we'll see how it works out.  I'm not sure if I want to have to keep a radio on me all the time.

I am officially back home after Gallifrey One and ready to write my wrap-up of the weekend.  Really I got back last night but didn't feel like typing anything because it was way to late.  Anyway, here was my weekend in rather bullet pointed highlights from each day.

Thursday )Friday )

That will be all for now since my computer seems to want to underline everything else whether I want to or not.

Waters of Mars. Waters of Mars. Waters of Mars. Waters of Mars. Waters of Mars. Waters of Mars.

I had wondered, while filling out a friending meme, if Glee was succeeding in usurping Doctor Who's current place in my fandom affections. Measuring today's excitement and anticipation against that of Wednesday, I have to say the answer is no.

Defying Gravity was pretty great though. Just saying.

  • Why have I not heard about -- until I watched The Daemons yesterday that is -- the Doctor almost being burned at the stake as a witch in the 1970s? I feel like I would reference that occurrence all the time.  I know I would start conversations all the time with "Hey remember that time I got beat up by a Morris dancer and was almost burned at the stake maypole?  That was crazy."
  • Does Jo Grant ever get less annoying? I'm really going to need her to do that right now.
  • The Master was cracking me up with his evil chanting.  Somehow that was probably not the reaction he was going for, but nonsense syllables + 70/80's computer programmer glasses = very funny.  Also, while being evil (and trying to raise the Devil) please refrain from pretending to be the vicar, it sends the wrong message.

I just have to do today's question from [livejournal.com profile] fannish5 as it combines my two favorite things.

Name five series that should have had a musical episode (and how it could have been explained).

1.  Buffy the Vampire Slayer - Yes I know that this show did actually have a musical episode, but since there are shows that have musical episodes that shouldn't (I'm looking at you Chicago Hope) I wanted to include this one that should.  Really, Buffy set the bar for all musical episodes ever.  You need songs that are well integrated and a reason for the characters to sing.

2. Doctor Who - You know it could happen.  Doctor Who would support a Rock Opera type of musical well.  The Doctor would land on some planet where the inhabitants sing instead of speak.  Since the TARDIS seems able to translate every other type of language she should be equally able to render all the characters' speech into song.

3. Pushing Daisies - This show was so theatrical to begin with that adding songs wouldn't be terribly out of place. After all, the narrative already has two characters who were performers and one who sings occasionally.  The story would be about a crime either in a theater or one in a Nashville type music machine.

4.  Veronica Mars - Okay this is mostly to see Kristen Bell sing more, but it wouldn't be too difficult to require Veronica (and possibly Wallace) to go under cover in the school play.  Duncan would already have the lead, since he was pretty involved in school anyway and Mac could be on tech (either from a genuine interest or as one of Veronica's undercover people).  Maybe Weevil could be there serving a punishment and turn out to be really good?

5.  House - Maybe I shouldn't put this one, as I'm not sure I would really want a musical episode of House, but I think it one of the few realistically based shows that could pull it off.  It would have to be either House once again in a coma or detoxing or a patient with symptoms that manifest as auditory hallucinations.

This may be rather cliche, but I have to say that I adore The Aztecs.  I'm glad that I bought it after finding that it is permanently on "very long wait" at blockbuster online, because I would have had to go buy it after seeing it and this way I got to do the viewing earlier.  I did have to LOL (yes I'm using some text speak - what of it) at the Aztecs wearing quilted safety fighting jackets -- they must have been very hot in the jungle.  Now I'm kind of sad because I only have one more story with Ian and Barbara left to watch.  *pout*

Although my classic Who viewing is still in its infancy, I've come to the conclusion that I prefer historicals to future adventures.  In general they hold up better.  Plus as an archaeologist history is sort of my thing.  I think I would be just as happy, or even more so, if the show just stayed on earth and went to a different time period all the time.  But then that would be different show, and the monsters would be more difficult to include, so maybe not.

I'd also Iike to rave about the text info extra on many of the classic who DVDs.  I think I like it even better than commentaries and I've always been a fan of comentaries.  You still get the interesting information of how shows are created and the funny anecdotes, but get to skip all the "oh he was wonderful" "I wonder what she's doing now" type chitchat inherent in the commentary form.  Basically the info is planned in advance and spread out over the feature so there is no dead bits.  Plus you can watch it during a first viewing without missing much on screen.
