Work and a Question

Whoo! I finished my first day as a crew chief.  I got to watch over the newbies while APM Trimbled all the area boundaries and features for the map.  Frankly, I'm not sure leaving someone who has never been in charge before in charge of two people who have never surveyed before is the best idea, but it worked out okay.  We covered paseing, compass usage, and dug two 500m transects. 

So the question:  Anybody have a particularly good way to teach the compass, 'cause I have one guy who just doesn't get it.  I really don't want to have to confiscate his GPS system (the car kind) as APM says, but it's not a appropriate substitution for the compass.

Congratulations on the promotion!
So now my question is - just how much does he not get the compass? And are you talking about the fancy ones with the wire to look through? Cause I never got the hang of it (didn't use it at field school, and P. couldn't remember how to use it, nor could E.).

We use the orienteering compasses where you look in the mirror and line up the two north arrows.

He doesn't seem to get the idea at all. The problem is really less the not getting, he seemed to understand it better after I made him take every baring we came across, and more the not even trying to use the compass.

Of course, the real problem is the PMs not allotting time for training and being upset when the people on their first day can't work as fast as someone who's been doing this for months or years.

I have the same prediction, but don't want to get ahead of myself.

Today we tried the two new people on one transect and me on another which seemed to speed things up a bit. Well, until the thunderstorm hit.
