He Plays the Violin
Jul. 2nd, 2005 12:49 pmI think I used this subject heading last year around this time, as it is generally apt for the fourth of July type time period. This year it is increasingly apt as I am attending Feild School at Poplar Forest, Jefferson's retirement home. Feild school is so cool. I get to dig in the dirt and find cool ( I use the term lightly) artifacts, and other such fun things. I say that I use the term cool lightly as most of our artifacts are very small pieces of brick, nails, and ceramic kibble. Those things which are only really interesting to the archaeologists.
Monday, being the actual fourth, as you are probably well aware, we will be having a free day of exciting events. At least I am told they will be exciting. For me this means that I have to talk to people about archaeology and make it sound exciting. I'm not sure I can do that. Especially since we're digging up lots of stuff, but no one really knows what it means yet. There is just the never ending stream of questions which never seem to be answered. While that is exciting on an academic level, I doubt it will hold equal excitement on the tourism level. Regardless, if you are in the Lynchburg VA area, or really anywhere close where you could get to the Lynchburg VA area within a few hours, you should come by. I may even let you screen, but only if you take the oath of not falling in the hole first!
