Ha! Wuthering Heights is a bit miserable. It's been a long time since I've read it though so I'm not sure if I agree with your character analysis or not. That said, I have no idea how books with unlikable characters are so popular. I had to stop reading Chuck Palaniuk's Diary because of this same issue! I guess some people find it easier to forge a connection? This is my only guess!
