Bar Etiquette Question

So, last night I went to the bar next to the hotel with a bunch of people from the crew.  Around midnight I decided it was time for me to go sleep, so I put on my jacket, closed out my tab, and headed to the door at which point some woman I don't know grabbed me by the shoulders.

Woman: Hey look here's a girl.
Me: ?
Woman: Will you dance with him.  <points to her friend (I hope) in the booth>
Me: I was on my way out the door.
Woman: He's shy.
Man with Woman: Are you shy?
Me: Um, yes.
Man <to the friend in the booth>: See she's shy too.  <to me> Well you were on your way out so drive safely.
Me: Thanks, I will.

So my question is: was I rude? Should I have diverted from my plan to leave at that moment in order to dance with this guy?

No, you weren't rude. You are never obligated to dance with anyone, especially strangers. The right answer is to smile, apologise and continue with your plans.

Thank you for the reassurance. That sounds like what I did, and what I will certainly do should this particular situation ever come up again.

blendercat says you were right. also, you were politer than blendercat might have been.....

Thank you blendercat. I think I've been living in the south too long. It's screwing with my sense of actual politeness versus overbearing southern politeness.

blendercat says there is nothing wrong with the south. In fact, blendercat is beginnning to think you are more southern than you think, you yankee infidel :-P

You had no obligation to even talk to them, let alone dance with him. My first thought when she grabbed me would have been to flail and run, so you were well within acceptable boundaries :-)

Oh - you might be getting a call about a reference this week from a 267 area code - I had a sorta interview yesterday and they want me to come in for the store meeting tonight, so I think it went well...

I'll be on the look out for that call. I hope you get the job and it doesn't involve you hurting so much.

MEEE TOOO! I'm totally done with seeing the doctor every two weeks or so. You probably missed the big PT drama; I don't think I posted up about that much. Three times a week from the middle of May till the end of July I had PT at 7 am. Never managed to get to work until 9 at the earliest. The day I'm told I can stop popping 3 Advil four times a day? Can't come soon enough. :-)
