My parents raised me the same way with books and I do the same for my 12 year old daughter. I read books of hers that she recommends to me, thinking that I might like it. But other than those, I let her make her own choices. And I'll answer questions if she asks but I don't feel the need to sit her down for a Very Special Discussion. She has no problems asking if she wants to know. She recently read 'To Kill A Mockingbird' and asked what rape was. I explained, she went "oh, okay" and went back to reading.

She wouldn't continue reading a book if she didn't like it or wasn't interested.
